Has anyone been to the Ruins of Alph lately? I know I investigated them for a few weeks when I was in Violet City when I started out, but has anyone else?

[He pauses, then tugs out his Trainer Handbook. He's written something in the front cover of it, and he's going to post it.]

Thus we shall erect a Pokémon statue outside.
They possess great insight and refuse the outside world.
We humans must learn to walk in harmony with them. We depart for their sakes.

That's roughly what the text on the walls. It took me a while to figure it out... That's why I was there for so long. I'm still kind of disappointed that I didn't see any weird Pokémon while I was staying though. I guess they're really shy.

I've been in Violet City for a while, but I haven't checked it out yet. What were they like?

Like how you'd expect ruins to be. Old and lit by lamps. Kind of musty.

Yeah, that's what I thought. But, you and a bunch of other guys seem pretty interested in it, so I thought there might be something more. Anyway, what do you think all of that means? I mean, it all sounds pretty mysterious, but you seem like you've been thinking about it a lot lately.

Well... I think it was a hope. If this world is like any other, then it must've had its share of wars. Maybe Pokémon were used in those, or maybe people fought them. A lot of Pokémon seem to have really pretty coats, so they could've been poached... Well, there's a lot that could've been that we don't know about. But I guess I'm getting off the point... I think it was a hope, that whoever came after the ones who wrote the message that we'd live peacefully with Pokémon.

No, no, it's fine. To be honest, though, I've never really thought about this sort of thing before. I guess I always just assumed that humans and pokemon got along from the start. But, if you're right... well, it's sort of encouraging. Like, if the people here can learn how to get along with pokemon, then maybe that means we can learn to get along with anybody. I bet that sounds pretty hokey, though, doesn't it?

It does sound kind of cliché, but it's a good message. It's just too bad there won't ever be something like "real peace," where everyone's happy and there's nothing wrong in the world.

Yeah... it would be nice if that could happen, but sometimes you *have* to fight. Like, not over stupid stuff, but there's people out there who, if nobody stops them, will hurt anybody and everybody around them. Sure, it would be more peaceful to leave them alone, but it wouldn't be right, either.

It doesn't really feel like anyone's come from a life they'd consider peaceful here, does it... You're right, anyway.

I haven't talked to enough people about their homes to say. But, if you're right...well, it's pretty different than this place, isn't it? I mean, if it wasn't for Team Rocket, Johto and Kanto would be pretty peaceful.

Yeah. I wonder if there's a way to beat them once and for all? But maybe they'd just come back even worse...

...I honestly don't know. But, I do know that we can't stand by and do nothing. And if they try to start a fight? I know that I'm going to finish it.

That's how I feel, too.
