[Who knew training Pokémon was so tough? Besides that, now he had two of them to deal with...

...or so it'd seem. For the last three days, there's been a Sentret trailing him - from New Bark Town, all the way to Violet City. He hadn't exactly caught it - he didn't really want to, considering it seemed pretty young to be out on its own and certainly it must have a family or something - and he's beginning to wonder if feeding the poor thing the first time he saw it was a Bad Idea.

He's sitting inside the Pokécenter for the moment; Doctor's outside with the Sentret, and with this peace and quiet he can finally settle down to talk to others for a while.]

I haven't been here too long [a little over a week, and that was pushing it; he'd only gotten to Violet that morning after trucking it as hard as he could] so I, um, have a question... Is it normal for a wild Pokémon to follow you if you feed it? Like a stray dog?

And if so, is it better to catch it or to hope it'll just go home?

They are. How long have you had Ling?

Oh, for about a year now.

And do you know what's funny? When we first met, she did not like me at all. She would always scratch, bite, and pull my hair, then she suddenly stopped after talking to a Vulpix that belonged to one of my friends here.

Maybe that Vulpix told her you were a good person, or something like that?

That's what I've thought, but whatever she said helped calm Ling down.

Sometimes these Pokemon seem more human than they are non-human, aru.

Sometimes they feel more human than most humans do. I guess it's really based on how you raise them though, right? Just like with any sort of animal.

Yes, they are just like children almost.

[Wow this sounds like a really stupid question but] Can they be taught to read?

Some of them can be.

[Reading partners!] Are there libraries here?

Of course, in any large city.

I wonder if Doctor'd like to read sometime... Well, thank you. Those were pretty strange questions, weren't they?

No, they were not. I've heard stranger, aru.

And is Doctor the name of one of your Pokemon?

Yes. He's my Audino. I, um... The Pokédex said that they used their ears to hear heartbeats and such, and I was reminded of the stethoscopes that doctors use, so I named him Doctor. [...] It's a little uncreative, I guess.

Audino? I've never heard of such a Pokemon before.

Really? He was with me when I started out... [Let's see-- Luca's gone for a moment, although he returns shortly with an Audino (-- and a smaller-than-average Sentret, holding onto the Audino's arm).]
